Can you imagine a city without a single Tesla (TSLA) – Get Tesla Inc.'s report on the go. Given their prominence since Elon Musk founded the company in 2003, that might seem like a thing of the past.

But as Reuters first reported, a district in northern China is making it a reality this summer.

Beidaihe District is banning all Tesla cars from entering its territory for the next two months. It is home to a resort town in the northern province of Hebei, which borders the coast of the Bohai Sea and is home to some 74 million people.

Why does this district ban Teslas?
The reason for the ban is not so much to maintain a quiet, car-free coast, but the fact that Beidaihe hosts a top-secret annual summit of China's top leaders.

The event is still shrouded in secrecy - especially from foreign observers. Exact dates are never announced, and each year some coverage only emerges after the summit has already taken place.

“Seemingly an annual break for [Chinese top leaders] to disconnect and relax on the long beaches of the fabled northern resort, it also became an occasion where the country's most powerful could spend time rejoicing. , chatting and chatting. each other, making it the most-watched unofficial event on the country's political calendar,” wrote journalist William Zheng for the South China Post in 2020.

A Beidaihe traffic police squad told Reuters the Tesla ban was instituted due to a "national matter".

He did not provide additional information on why Tesla was targeted as opposed to any other foreign cars while Tesla, which has disbanded its public relations team, could not be reached for comment.
